It's a paradoxical situation, to say the least. Ian Adams and Tam Ryan, the creative duo behind the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre's annual pantomime, find themselves in this very scenario.
"It's quite surreal," Ryan confesses. "Here we are, in the midst of a heatwave, crafting jokes and songs for a winter production. It's a constant mental juggling act."
A Year-Round Commitment
The commitment to pantomime is a year-round endeavor. Adams and Ryan began crafting the script for this year's production, Treasure Island, last September, with a break in between panto seasons. The process is meticulous, with adaptations made once the cast is finalized.
"Autumn is when the magic really happens," Ryan adds. "That's when we hit our stride, with costumes, press launches, and rehearsals all coming together."
A Season of Set Design
For set designers like Bruus, the summer months are a busy time. With a rich history in theater, starting as a stagehand at a young age, Bruus has dedicated his life to the art of panto.
"Panto has been my passion since my teenage years," he reflects. "It's a labor of love, and I've built countless sets over the years."
Bruus is currently working on sets for Lichfield's production of Robin Hood, as well as other festive projects. The demand for his expertise is high, especially during the winter months when pantos and Christmas shows dominate the theater scene.
A Festive Takeover
"The festive season takes over our lives," Murley adds. "From January onwards, it's all about panto and Christmas shows. It's a busy, but incredibly rewarding, time of year."
